Rig notes: the Dymar 2000 is a robust PMR set with 100 channel thumbwheel selection, an internal loudspeaker and a sensitive receiver with an IF filter specified for 12.5kHz channels. All components are widely available and easily replaced, and no surface mount devices are used. There is plenty of space inside the case to accomodate toneburst and CTCSS boards etc. Although designed for AM service the receiver contains a CA3089 FM detector IC, so modification for NBFM use is straightforward and, since the in-service RX frequency was around 140MHz, little retuning is required. The transmitter modification is more involved and requires changes to several RF coils. However the end result is a fine self-contained 15-25W, 100-channel 2m mobile/base set.

Rig notes: the excellent Key sets are manufactured by the Japanese Kyodo company. These sets have a modular design so circuit elements such as the control head, PLL board etc are easily removed and replaced. They have a number of innovative features, for example the receiver has a audio delay circuit to eliminate squelch tails. Conversion to amateur use is straightforward, and 16-channel sets can be modified to provide 32 or more channels. Components are widely available and easily replaced, and no surface mount devices are used. There is plenty of space inside the case to accomodate toneburst and CTCSS boards etc.

Rig notes: the Pye/Philips M290 (crystal-controlled) & MX290 (synthesised) series are the ideal rigs for amateur use: highly robust, an excellent RF design with 'bomb-proof' front-end, easily serviced with widely available components and no surface-mount devices.
There is plenty of space inside the case to accomodate toneburst and CTCSS boards etc. In addition, apart from the occasional sticking tuning core, retuning to amateur bands is generally straightforward, with little or no modification required.
The basic MX290-series synthesised set is restricted to 16 channels, but it takes only a few minutes work to add another 16 channels; if the 16 pin PROM is replaced by a 18-pin PROM, 64 or more channels can be made available.

Rig notes: the Pye/Philips PF85/PFX sets share a common chassis, use the same range of aerials, battery packs and accessories, and share a build standard that makes the average amateur hand portable seem flimsy. They have a modular design, with all boards easily replaced. Spare boards, batteries and chargers are often seen at rallies at bargain-basement prices. Retuning to amateur bands is straightforward with no modifications required. There is sufficient space inside the case to accomodate a 1750Hz tone generator or CTCSS board.
